Take 1: Hollywood Agencies Looking Forward to a fresher Hollywood in 2010
In 2009 we saw many old Hollywood box office records broken, however it was a very hard year for many in
Hollywood and in the film industry. Much of the Hollywood success of 2009 was the result of years ago
planning and production during good economic times in Hollywood and in the US. Are we starting to see a
down turn? How will the Hollywood film projects just going into development now perform in the future? Is
there a strong television market for new Hollywood television studios? Is there a strong film market for new
films in production now in Hollywood? Is there access to film financing right now in Hollywood? What about
foreign film financing? What needs to be done to be profitable and survive in the Hollywood film & television
industry today? We’d like to share some of our opinions about where Hollywood is headed.
Times will get tougher for most Hollywood Production Companies and Hollywood Agencies as the year goes
on. We’ve already seen the troubles facing NBC and its television writers as it faces the task of producing
more shows to cover the cancellation of Conan O’Brian. Hollywood was also shocked by the bankruptcy of Bob
Yari Productions with numerous A-List Hollywood Talent either attached to or invested in the Hollywood
Production Company. Consolidation will be the key to surviving in Hollywood; we’ve already seen numerous
mergers of Hollywood Talent Agencies and Hollywood Production Companies in the past year. Many are
starting to see the benefits of pooling together production resources and Hollywood talent.
Numerous smaller Hollywood Production Companies and smaller foreign Independent Film Production
Companies are reporting fewer film investors and saying financing for new projects is not available in
Hollywood and drying up abroad. Seasoned Film Investors are taking no chances on smaller Indie projects,
but are looking for more sure fire Hollywood hits with big name Hollywood talent attached. Originality will suffer
in the near future and we will see a Hollywood Landscape full of remakes and tireless sequels. Television will
also see this trend and we’ve seen NBC revise old series such as Knight Rider and American Gladiator.
Is there a strong market for new Hollywood Productions? Hollywood film productions that have the ability to
attract distribution deals are no-brainers, however lower quality productions that may end up in the straight to
DVD market should be avoided. The DVD market is overcrowded right now and the market is soft. We’ve seen
DVD sales slump and many Hollywood studios have been hurt by the trend. Furthermore, lesser known
Hollywood titles not generating Hollywood buzz will be costly mistakes. This is not the time for Indie
Filmmakers to take out a second mortgage (which is now next to impossible to do in the state of California) to
finance that dream project. Hollywood Television studios should be fine. Demand still seems high very a wide
range of new television productions. Cable still seems to be expanding and a demand for new shows steady,
but still watch your cost and bottom-line. Do not be the next Hollywood studio causality. Now is the time to
maybe only feature one A-list Talent, Hollywood is starting to see this trend as Hollywood productions
surround one big Hollywood star with no-names. Be a little more like Hollywood Icon Chuck Barris, who
created television hit shows (Gong Show, $1.98 Beauty Contest, Dating Game) with limited budgets which
were ratings hits.
Does Hollywood really need to produce a new live-action Care Bears Movie or to bring Dallas to the big
screen? Don’t get caught up in the Hollywood pre-sold properties craze, it could be risky and not payoff at the
box office. Just because a Hollywood film is based on an old popular book or television series, doesn’t
automatically mean it will be a hit in Hollywood. Don’t make it a stretch to make the deal happen when
obtaining the rights. Some old books and television series are better left as old books and television series.
Examples would be the forgettable Beverly Hillbillies or Garbage Pail Kids the Movie, all Hollywood bombs.
Use common sense and good judgment. I get tired of Hollywood Agents pitching these sometimes tacky and
ridiculous ideas. Don’t believe an original idea can still make money in Hollywood? Ask James Cameron, he
can give you a Billion reasons why you should try something new in Hollywood with your production company.
What about foreign investors investing in Hollywood? As of right now, Hollywood film financing has tightened
up and for Hollywood Independents almost completely dried up. Long gone are the days from a few short
years ago where money poured into new media ventures. We believe the financial troubles Dubai is also
experiencing will also affect future film financing. We’ve have seen Dubai’s recent attempt to become the new
Hollywood with Film Festivals and new construction projects building studio developments dry up and put on
hold. Looking forward we see Dubai’s impact on Hollywood films to be very minimal as they straighten out
their over expansion mess.
Does Hollywood need so many releases? What happened to the good old days of Hollywood summer
blockbusters which hung around week after week being #1 every week? The large 24 screen movie theaters
have become multiple screens for four or five films instead of a place which shows numerous types of
Hollywood movies to larger crowds of filmgoers. There are too many Hollywood releases. A recent study
showed if Hollywood releases were cut by 20% it would have little effect on the total box office numbers. The
movie going audience is simply distracted by too many releases and too many choices week after week. It
would be more beneficial if more films hung around longer on more screens.
To survive the current Hollywood market we believe patience and creativity are the two most important
elements you should possess. Good luck to all our Hollywood contacts in 2010 and we look forward to
speaking with new Hollywood Producers, Directors and Agents.
Sincerely,
Hollywood-Scripts.com

Take 2: How Hollywood Agents can overcome sales resistance in 2010
The Hollywood landscape in 2010 will be a little more difficult to navigate for Hollywood Agents. Many
Hollywood Agents are already starting to feel the squeeze and having trouble closing their deals. The
Hollywood Industry is facing new challenges with the economic downturn. So how can a Hollywood Agent
overcome sales resistance and close that big Hollywood deal? How can he keep his or her name in the
headlines of Variety and the Hollywood Reporter?
First a Hollywood Agent needs to sell himself. You are not only a Hollywood Agent, but you are human first.
How many times have you been in Agent mode and so focused on pushing a particular Hollywood talent,
project or script that you forget what you are really selling. We are really selling ourselves and Hollywood is
all about relationships. More Hollywood Agents make this mistake more than any other. So next time you
have that big Hollywood meeting with you client, try to make it a little more about you and them and less about
the project you’re pitching. Ask how’s the family doing or about their other interests. You might find out that
you share some common ground with that so-called difficult Hollywood Producer or Director.
Hollywood agents assume your next Hollywood deal is going to happen, that the next project is a done deal.
You will find it a lot harder for your Hollywood client to back out of a deal if you assume from the beginning
that this is going to happen. The spec script that your Hollywood client has concerns about is going to sell,
the Hollywood talent you manage is going to agree to star in that so-so television series to keep his or her
career going or you hard to please Hollywood Director is going to agree to finally direct something that isn’t
Oscar material, Treat all objections and set backs as just that. These are just things to overcome and not
stopping points or reasons to terminate talks or contract negotiations with studios. Make the words “no
problem” part of you negotiating vocabulary. You can figure things out and keep things rolling as you continue
on. That’s why so many great Hollywood projects or deals end up in Hollywood Development Hell, because
no one involved in the deal has the pose to keep the ball rolling and treat objections as minute details
instead of stopping points or reason to panic and become upset. Keep your composure, if stay calm so will
everyone else. “Never let them see you sweat” seems so cliché in the world of Hollywood Agents, but it’s true.
Hollywood Agents need to be able to read Hollywood clients buying signs or commitments to a particular
project. Most of us agree that we have too many things to do on any giving moment, so why not take some
weight of your shoulders. So why be pushy or harp on a particular project. Why become that stereotypical
Hollywood Agent everyone likes to steer clear of? If your client says no to a particular project or needs time to
think something over, give it to them. Tell them “I know you need more time or may want to think about this a
little longer, how about I call you in two weeks or next time we meet we’ll make a final decision? How does
that sound?” You’ll be surprised about how many clients will at least consider something if they have more
time before they have to make a final decision and act on something. When you give your Hollywood client
two weeks to think about something, you should not think about it. Make a note to call on your calendar and
go on with something else. You’ll be shocked to see how many clients actually call before the two weeks are
up and agree to your terms. Isn’t it better to wait and have a shot at putting a deal together than have an
automatic no answer. You’ll be a less stressful Hollywood Agent too.
I know I said relax, but a Hollywood Agent needs to create a sense of urgency too. If you given your client two
weeks to think about something and you know it’s a dead deal why not suddenly cause a panic. Call a
number you know they don’t always check and leave a pretend urgent message and then call them at lunch
time on a line they always answer over excited asking them where have they been all morning and you’ve
been trying to reach them. Tell them so and so called this morning wanting them to commit, but they have to
know in the next tens minutes. Pretend you don’t even know if you can get the deal done. You’ll be surprised
how many dead deals can get done this way.
Today a Hollywood Agent needs to overcome procrastination. When things start to slow down in Hollywood, it
is important to keep moving and for your clients to keep moving. Agree with your clients that their next
Hollywood project is not ideal, but it will keep them in the Hollywood lime light and keep their careers going. If
you keep moving it will allow other doors to be open down the road. Take your own advice and keep things
going too. Represent that newer talent or writer to the industry you would never consider before. What ever
you have to do, keep you schedule busy and real opportunities will present themselves. Always be closing.
To all Hollywood Agents, Managers and Agencies, good luck in 2010, we’re all going to need it.
